General Surgery Residency Programs

Categorical

PGY-1 year includes one month of ED and ICU, and two weeks of Anesthesia as well as a one month elective in the surgical subspecialties:

  • Assigned to a team
  • Transitional Year Residents also assigned to Surgical Inpatient Teams
  • The On call schedule averages one in four nights.  There is one day off each week
  • Educational emphasis on pre and postoperative management
  • Ample surgical experience - approximately 100 operative cases 
  • 5 year program

PGY-2 - 80% inpatient general surgery experience with significant responsibility for surgical subspecialty service:

  • On call is every fourth night, one day in seven off 
  • Rotation to Surgical Outpatient Department, Surgical Pathology, ICU and primary consult to E.R. 
  • One month elective

PGY-3 - 4 months at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, for 1 month transplantation, 2 months' experience in pediatric surgery, and 1 month of trauma or CC. Remaining 8 months consists of GI endoscopy, gynecology (1 mo), cardiac and general surgery at Bassett Medical Center:

  • On call is every fourth night, one day off each week 
  • One month elective

PGY-4 & 5 - Bassett Medical Center, the last year as Chief Resident:

  • Every 4th night call inhouse
  • Log approximately 1,000 operative cases for PGY-1 through PGY-5 years, 250 cases as Chief 
  • Chief is responsible for administering the service, assigning cases to junior residents as well as teaching
  • Opportunities for participation in ongoing laboratory projects exist
  • Clinical as well as laboratory investigation is encouraged
  • 50% of graduates enter fellowships
  • One month elective PGY 4 year to rural surgery practice in Saranac Lake, NY

Preliminary

  • One first-year position is available. 
  • Rotations closely follow those of categorical residents.
  • It is possible to emphasize areas of interest within the standard rotation as well as during the elective month.
  • Effort is made to assist these residents desiring advanced subspecialty training to obtain positions if they do not already have one.
  • Over the past five years, 40% of our preliminary residents have obtained further surgical training. The remaining 60% are completing their training in other medical fields.
