Surgical Oncology Mentorship

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
A mentorship with one surgical oncologist but includes time with other surgeons and in the cancer center.

OBJECTIVES
The student will gain familiarity with risk assessment, screening, natural history, surgical treatment, adjuvant therapy and patient follow-up of the major cancers. The student will also learn about the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, tumor registries, clinical research (ACOSOG, ECOG) and an integrated cancer program.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The student will primarily assist in the care of Dr. Ryans patients. This will usually include 2 days in the operating room and 2 days in the clinic each week as well as inpatient rounds and time for discussion of and reflection on the days patients. One or two days each week will be spent with other surgeons or cancer providers. The student will be required to attend Surgical Grand Rounds on Monday mornings and the multidisciplinary Tumor Board each Wednesday afternoon. The student may attend other surgical conferences, hospital conferences, and surgical medical student lectures as will fit into her/his schedule. The student will be given a syllabus to read and discuss over the month.

FEEDBACK
Critical feedback will be provided by the faculty.

EVALUATION
Evaluation will be given by Dr. Ryan through observation of the clinical activities.

DATA
Maximum number of fourth year students per month: one. Housing is provided when available, with the exception of the months of June and July. No automobile is necessary. Night call each Monday (usually) with Dr. Ryan is optional. Rotations of less than 4 weeks are available.
