Rural Surgery

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
This elective will expose the student to the unique aspects of rural surgery. Students will travel to affiliated rural surgical sites with attending surgeons to participate in a wide range of clinic and outpatient operative experiences.

OBJECTIVES
To experience the diverse and challenging aspects of the practice of rural surgery by participating in clinics as well as outpatient and inpatient surgical cases.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The student will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with several rural-based surgical attendings. By traveling to our rural outreach clinic hospitals to see patients and assist in operations and procedures, the student will become aware of the issues and complexities of a rural practice.

FEEDBACK
The student will be directly supervised by a member of the attending staff throughout the rotation, with weekly feedback sessions and an exit interview with the course director.

EVALUATION
Students are evaluated by the attending with whom they work.

DATA
This elective is only available in October, November, January and March. Maximum number of students per month: One. Housing is provided when available. No night call. Conferences to be attended: Surgical Grand Rounds and Surgical Case Presentations. Course is a minimum of 2 weeks in duration.
