Rural Family Medicine

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
A two week outpatient family medicine experience in a rural primary care practice.

OBJECTIVES
Students will improve communication and patient skills, develop expertise in management of common outpatient problems, including assessing and motivating appropriate preventive health interventions and coordination of care with community resources and specialists.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The student will spend the majority of this two week elective in an outpatient setting seeing patients in teh Bassett Healthcare office in Cobleskill with Dr. Wright, a board certified family physician. On occasion, students may also work with Dr. Wright's colleagues including MD's, DO's, FNP's, and PA's. Emphasis will be placed on developing excellent diagnostic and treatment skills, careful resource utilization, and superb patient-physician relationships. Patients willbe seen independently and presented. A one to two page reflective writing piece is required on completion of the elective as part of teh learning experience.

FEEDBACK
Feedback will be given continuously throughout the elective. no formal examination will be given.

EVALUATION
A formal evaluation of the student will be done at the end of the elective.

DATA
Housing is provided in Cooperstown, when available (30 miles away). A vehicle is MANDATORY AND NOT PROVIDED. No housing is available during June and July.
