Nephrology
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
This elective will introduce the student to the field of Nephrology by working in close daily contact with an Attending Nephrologist and Resident rotating in Nephrology as he/she makes his/her daily hospital and clinic rounds.
OBJECTIVES
This elective is designed to familiarize the student with all aspects of clinical nephrology including fluid and electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders, acute and chronic renal failure, hypertension, and treatment of the above.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The elective utilizes Renal Clinic, the Inpatient Renal Consultation Service of The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, and the Dialysis Unit. Responsibilities of the student include seeing renal consultations, preparing presentations for daily nephrology and attending rounds. Regularly scheduled activities include attendance at Medical Grand Rounds, teaching sessions reviewing renal physiology and clinical nephrology.
FEEDBACK
Will be provided informally daily and formally at the end of the elective.
EVALUATION
Evaluation will be based upon the evolution of the students performance during the elective. This will be judged on the students fund of knowledge, clinical judgment, and participation in case presentations and attending rounds.
DATA
Given all year, except the month of June. Maximum number of fourth year students per month: One. Housing is provided when available, with exception of the months of June and July.
